A barrel can be created by crouch right clicking with a Cooking Station Maker while standing directly in front of a vanilla Minecraft barrel and looking at it.

You can add ingredients into a barrel by right clicking on it with the ingredient in your hand. You can add ingredients in bulk by crouch right clicking.

Once you're done adding ingredients, you can seal the barrel using a shovel. If the ingredients added corresponds to a valid recipe, the barrel will be successfully sealed and you will be told what the results will be. Once enough time has passed, you can get your results by right clicking on the barrel. If you right click on a sealed barrel before the results are ready, you will be told how much time is remaining.

You can view what ingredients you have added into the barrel by right clicking on it with an empty hand before you seal it.

To compensate for the waiting time, you can cook in bulk with a barrel. For example, if you add 18 salt and 18 buckets of milk into a barrel, you will get 18 cheese after 10 minutes have passed.
