Gunbird is an arcade vertically scrolling shoot' them up, in which the objective is getting through stage killing as much enemies inside as possible. There are five playable characters, with the same type of shots, but being different with every characer. There are three types of shots: the normal shot, the charged shot and the bomb; being the normal shot the fastest but the most weak of the three, the charged shot a slow but really strong shot, and the bomb really strong and with lot of reach, but with limited uses. When the player obtains a power up, their normal shot increases in number of shots and reach. The normal shot can be upgraded up to four times.
Ash's normal shot starts shooting two green lasers in one shot, in his first upgrade it shoots three, in his second it shoots four green lasers and two ring shaped lasers, and as his notmal shot keeps being upgraded, Ash progressively shoots more lasers and ring shots.
His charged shot is a big energy ball, which takes a lot of time to get charged and his bomb is a slow explosion that doesn't cover as much terrain as other characters' bombs. He is the fastest character in the game and he also hits the hardest.
Marion's normal shot starts shooting one blue laser, and as she gets upgrades, she starts shooting more lasers in every direction and homing stars that are directed straight where enemies are. In her charged shot she shoots her rabbit, which doesn't cover much but hits much harder than a normal shot. When Marion tiggers her bomb she shoots several boomerang shaped shots in every direction.
When Valnus triggers in his normal shot, he starts shooting four blue lasers. In his first upgrade his lasers get thicker, and as he keeps upgrading he he gets more lasers and he starts shooting two green lasers that come out of his side. In his charged shot, Valnus streches his arms forward, and when he triggers his bomb, he shoots four green lasers in every cardinal direction during three seconds, getting super armor* in the process. Valnus has some of the best firepower in the game.
Yuan Nang’s normal shot without any uprades shoots two green lasers. The normal shot with one upgrade shoots three lasers, and it can shoot up until six lasers and two blue swords in the final upgrade. When Yuan Nang activates her charged shot, she flings forward her stuff, and when she releases her bomb, she sends a lot of clones of herself flying through the whole screen. Because of her raw power, she is a very good character for new players.
He starts shooting two long lasers in his unupgraded normal shot, following with four lasers in his first upgrade, eight in his second upgrade, up to ten lasers at a time and two to four missiles that launch straight forward, in his final upgrade. His bomb are four streams of fire that move really slow and his charged shot fires five fireworks at once.
*Super armor: State of a character in which it is invincible during some frames The character can have super armor during a special attack, for example.
The controls for this game are simple. You got a stick in the arcade machine to move in any direction, a "fire" button for executing the normal shots when being pressed once, and executing a charged shot when being held and released, and "bomb" button for throwing bombs. As it can be seen in the photo below, this game can be played cooperatively, being the controls for the second player exactly the same as player one's controls, but his charged shot and bomb are really slow.
