In project management a role is a duty that a person takes on or plays.

Each role on a team is defined by a set of specific skills that are needed to accomplish certain responsibilities or tasks. Usually tasks are assigned to roles. The clearer the description of the defining skill sets, the easier the assignment of a task to a role.
