Raven notifies the user of new messages in several ways:

1. Each channel is badged with the number of unread messages pending for that channel.
2. The Raven icon on the main AREDN node's status page is badge with the total number of unread messages.
3. Any open Raven tab in the web browser will contains text indicating how many unread messages are pending.
