Laskowski Lab Expectations 01: Onboarding - kkacevas/Laskowski-Lab GitHub Wiki

Onboarding

Whenever someone new joins the lab, there are a number of procedural things that need to be done. The new member should work with their direct supervisor (either a grad student, postdoc, tech or Kate) to make sure ALL of these things are completed prior to them spending time in thelab.

  1. Read the lab manual.

  2. Keys. Keys can be requested from the main EVE office by emailing Debbie Davidson, cc Kate in this email too([email protected]). Request keys that will open the outside of Storer, Rooms 2350, 2350A (if you should have access to the fish room) and 2348.

  3. Lab communication and data storage. Each person should be added to:

    • The lab Slack (ask Kate to do this)
    • The shared Google calendar (anyone with access should be able to share this)
    • The lab Box account (anyone with access should be able to share this)
  4. Fish room access.

    • Complete IACUC’s ACU101 online traininghttps://research.ucdavis.edu/policiescompliance/animal-care-use/training-classes/animal-care-and-use-101-acu101-course

      • If the ‘Register’ button is available to you at the bottom of that website, go ahead and register and take the course.
      • If the ‘Register’ button is not available then email [email protected] get access, telling them you are working in the Storer molly animal facility with Dr. Laskowski.
    • Complete Occupational Health risk assessment. Email Kate for her to initialize a risk assessment; you will then receive an email from OHSS where you will need to complete a health questionnaire. This requires that you include dates of your immunizations (if you received immunizations as a child, it is okay to put in a date from when you were a baby).

    • Be trained in appropriate fish procedures by senior lab personnel (this can be Kate, the lab manager, or the graduate student who you are working with). Sign and date the Training Log that is kept in the Animal Care Records binder in the fish room.

    • Once all this is complete, email Kate to let her know (include your phone number in the email as this is needed to add you to the protocol) and she will file an amendment.

  5. Safety protocols.

    • Each person needs to get added to our online safety group (https://ehs.ucop.edu/ask Kate)
    • Complete UC Laboratory Safety Fundamentals online training (must be updated every 3 years): https://safetyservices.ucdavis.edu/training/laboratory-safety
    • Receive training from Kate and sign appropriate documentation in safety folder
      • Departmental EAP
      • Job Safety Analysis (JSA)
      • Site-Specific Orientation
      • Annual Safety training review (CUPA)
  6. Getting supplies

    • Orders are placed through Joe Patrocinio ([email protected]). Email Joe and cc Kate with the supplies you want to order. Kate then knows to respond to Joe to tell him which account should be charged.
      • Best to include a web link to the direct product you want
      • Make sure to check up with Joe about order status if you haven’t heard back in a few days or so
    • Common supplies can be picked up at the store-room (office supplies, paper towels, etc). Tell Joe/Phong and they can list it on our account
    • If you buy supplies on your own then know that there is a daily $500 limit. Receipts should be given to Debbie ([email protected]) and she will ensure that you are reimbursed.
