How to Clean a Fish Tank - kkacevas/Laskowski-Lab GitHub Wiki
A dirty fish tank can be one that used to be a hospital tank or that was used for an experiment, etc. Make sure all fish are out of tank before starting cleaning process!
What you Need:
- 12:1 bleach solution (12 water: 1 bleach)
- dirty fish tank
- sink sprayer/tap water
- paper towels
- bucket
- siphon tube
- colander (for gravel, if needed)
- fish net
Steps on Cleaning a Dirty Fish Tank:
- Turn off water flow and air stone if tank still has water in it.
- Use siphon tube and bucket to empty out all the water in the tank. Dump water down the drain.
- Use a fish net or siphon tube to get out all gravel. Do not throw away gravel unless very infected. Instead, use colander to spray gravel and clean it very well. Once you are done rinsing it, you can place it on a garbage bag on a shelf and allow to dry for 1-2 days. When it is completely dry, put gravel in gravel storage container.
- Disconnect overflow tube from tank and let those overflow pieces soak in bleach solution for 5 minutes. When time is up, dump bleach and rinse overflow items with tap water VERY well (can scrub out any algae). Let pieces soak in water and then scrub and rinse again. Rinse at least 3 times before letting them dry on shelf.
