according to a non-profit organization called STOP STREET HARASSMENT, catcalling is defined as "unwanted comments, gestures, and actions forced on a stranger in a public place without their consent and is directed at them because of their actual or perceived sex, gender, gender expression, or sexual orientation." i think the real source of the problem is male masculinity. the idea of masculinity causes harm to both men and women. men are told to play offense, which is why they feel entitled to aggression. girls are told to be aware and self defend. guys are not the offense and girls are not the defense. being masculine shouldn't mean that you always have to be in control. being gentle and respectful to women does not make you any less of a man. masculinity should not be based fundamentally on oppression, violence, and power over others. i think there are three simple things you have to teach boys:
- love people
- respect people
- and most importantly, dont assault
