Bitstring to GR - juhameskanen/abstract GitHub Wiki

Discussion summary: bitstring → GR via compression

Context

  • Compression-based derivation of QM, GR and cosmology; master equation P(γ|O) ∝ exp(−C_O[γ]), cost split into C_D + C_ψ + C_G).
  • "Emergent Spacetime via Spectral Compression in Static State Networks" of a brief description of the theory. The real interest was its "gas pressure" analogy: a static bitstring read as a scalar density/pressure field, with an observer's walk through configurations producing an emergent vector field (flux).

Critique of the Gemini document

Sound: the cost C[ψ] = ∫|k|^p|ψ̃|² is a Sobolev norm and mirrors the Euclidean path-integral suppression of rough paths; the Hessian of KL divergence is the Fisher metric; the static/timeless picture has relatives (Page–Wootters, Barbour, Jacobson, Van Raamsdonk).

Problems:

  • Conflates two mechanisms (real weight exp(−βK) vs. phase cancellation); the master equation with both is neither a clean probability nor an amplitude. Stationary phase gives the ħ→0 limit, not smooth typical paths.
  • Misstates Jacobson 1995 (Clausius relation on local Rindler horizons, not ∇T=0 alone).
  • Error: T_μν = P g_μν is vacuum energy (ρ = −P), not an ideal fluid at rest. The flux section needs V to be a unit timelike vector.
  • "GR drops out automatically" is circular: conservation doesn't fix G ∝ T (needs Lovelock-type assumptions), and Noether has nothing to act on in a discrete graph without diffeomorphisms.
  • Ollivier-Ricci curvature is not a metric. The Fisher metric is Riemannian, so there is no Lorentzian signature. A DFT along a path presupposes the ordering that is supposed to emerge.
  • Drifts from his framework: infinite network with complex weights vs. his finite counting + Solomonoff setup; drops observer dependence, the 3-sphere, and the D-ψ-G decomposition; overclaims GR when his own status is metric-agnostic with a negative result on 1/r (C_s is translation-invariant) and no two-body "pull" yet.
  • Verdict: fine as a pitch of the intuition, not something to cite.

Points established

  1. Static block, ensemble of histories. All observer walks exist. The observer is typical among the observer-containing videos with the highest count (Boltzmann typicality + Solomonoff coding theorem). Compression alone favors frozen videos, so the weighting is conditioned on the observer existing, as established earlier.
  2. Frames differ macroscopically. The whole 1+3 history is one object, so matter and metric live together and backreaction is not a separate mechanism. This matches Wheeler/Barbour-style block GR.
  3. Decoder is paid for. No external encoder or metaphysics. The cost of mapping bits/ψ to geometry sits inside the description (roughly K(D) + K(data | D)). The right mapping is the one that gives the best observer-conditioned measure. If mappings were free, the measure would collapse.
  4. Central conjecture (his): histories satisfying GR's local conservation constraints admit shorter total descriptions than comparable histories that don't.
    • Supporting chain: a translation-symmetric rule is cheap to describe, and Noether's theorem (1918: continuous symmetry ⇒ conserved quantity) then gives conservation as a corollary of low complexity.
    • Flagged a split: weak (conserving beats non-conserving; Noether plausibly gives this) vs. strong (diffeomorphism-invariant GR beats other conserving theories, e.g., Lorentz-invariant field theory on a fixed flat background or Nordström gravity). The strong part needs an extra argument, such as: a fixed background costs extra bits, and the observer as a geometric object leaves no independent background.
    • Newtonian gravity in external time doesn't fit his picture. Newton-Cartan (block form) carries a preferred-time surcharge.
    • "Comparable videos" still needs a definition (same ψ-content, same resolution, different embeddings/rules).
  5. Energy conservation in GR is local (∇_μT^{μν}=0), not global.
  6. Observer and memory: the observer is defined as a geometric object in 1+3. All of her information is in ψ (spectrally compressed). Defining "inside" spectrally would be very costly (sharp boundary ⇒ slowly decaying spectrum, an uncertainty-principle-as-description-length point), so she perceives a geometric projection with informational boundaries. ψ↔spacetime is many-to-many, giving a joint measure (G-ψ-D). Geometry is "primary" in the selection ordering (cheap coarse code), with ψ as refinement, so the two claims are compatible.
  7. Rendering picture: ψ is the compressed stream, Born sampling is the rendering step (same in every candidate, so it cancels in comparisons), and the particle image in 1+3 is the decoded frame. The observer is a subset of the image. The only thing that varies between candidates is the embedding of ψ's arguments into a 1+3 geometry, which is where GR must win.
  8. No per-frame compression. A single ψ describes the entire observer walk, MPEG-like. Microscopic frame-to-frame differences are Born dithering.

Consequences derived (confirmation pending where noted)

  • The Born draw must be joint over the whole history, not per frame (independent draws would be noise).
  • Inter-frame compression becomes spectral sparsity along the time axis. A ψ concentrated on a shell in (ω, k) is a wave-equation solution (the shell is the dispersion relation, likely tied to Paper VII), and translation invariance of the shell gives energy-momentum conservation via Noether.
  • The GR constraint holds exactly on the coarse-grained stress-energy from |ψ|² and only statistically on the rendered particles, so tests should use the coarse-grained field.
  • Hard part: gravity is nonlinear. The metric is decoded from ψ, and the shell condition depends on the metric, so the cheapest ψ must be a self-consistent fixed point. Backreaction and the two-body "pull" should come out of that fixed point.
  • Side note: for a quadratic cost Σ K(k)|ρ̃(k)|², the two-body interaction is the Fourier transform of K. A roughness penalty (K ∝ |k|^p, p ≥ 0) gives contact-range forces only, so 1/r needs a 1/k² weight, likely from the counting measure M and not from the spectral cost C_s (counting measure vs spectral cost? Aren't these two the same measure - the smaller spectral cost, the more numerous ..)

Parked ideas (not to be built yet)

  • Testbed 1: compare walk classes (unconstrained, local-conserving hops, matched-branching non-conserving control) on how well coarse-grained density at t+1 is predicted from t (closure) and on compressed length.
  • Testbed 2: random local rules, testing whether description length correlates with having a conserved quantity.
  • Both are only meaningful after "comparable videos" is defined.

Open question awaiting the user

Is ω treated on the same footing as k in C_ψ, so that the cost is the 4D spectral cost of the whole block, or does time enter differently in his formulation?

Other things to raise later

  • Define "comparable videos" and "same decoder class" so comparisons aren't tilted by decoder length.
  • Whether K(D) is explicitly part of C_D in the master equation (partly answered: the mapping is priced inside the description).
  • The two-part code reading of G-ψ-D (G cheap coarse code, ψ refinement) should be stated explicitly in the papers.
