Windows App Essentials Changelog

This page lists release changelogs for Windows App Essentials add-on.

Note: originally called Windows 10 App Essentials, this add-on was renamed to Windows App Essentials in 2021 to reflect support for future Windows releases such as Windows 11. Internally, it is still called Windows 10 App Essentials or WinTenApps to reflect the ad-on's origins and to denote actual Windows system version in use (10.0).

Supported Windows releases

For each Windows release, Windows App Essentials provides support for at least twelve months and up to end of consumer support (18 months for Windows 10, two years for Windows 11) except Windows Insider Preview where the add-on supports latest build. Windows Server support duration is tied to client releases (for example, Windows Server 2019 support duration is tied to Windows 10 Version 1809) whether or not client and server releases have the same build. Windows Enterprise LTSC (long-term servicing channel), as well as Windows Server Core and semi-annual and annual container channel server releases are not supported.

Note: support duration also depends on add-on maintenance - duration can be shortened if the add-on becomes unsupported prior to end of consumer support for a Windows release.

Windows 10

Also corresponds to Windows 10 App Essentials era. The add-on supports a given Windows 10 feature update for at least 12 months. Windows 10 Version 22H2, the final feature update, is supported until October 2025 (no support for extended security updates).

  • Settings: In Windows 11 22H2 and later, NVDA will announce the name of the update being downloaded from Windows Update. This works best with selective UIA event registration off, but if this setting is enabled, move to updates list as soon as it appears so NVDA can detect and announce update progress.
  • Settings: In newer Windows 11 21H2 releases, optional update title will be announced if shown.

  • The following UIA events are no longer tracked and logged due to lack of useful information: drag start, drag cancel, drop target enter, drop target leave.
  • XAML heading recognition is deprecated and will be removed in a future release as it caused problems in apps such as Calculator and Settings.
  • Removed app modules for File Explorer and Microsoft Store as Store version 2 (Windows 10/11) provides better support for download progress announcements without using the app module.
  • Added support for Windows 11 Notepad.
  • File Explorer: Due to compatibility issues with other add-ons, File Explorer app module was removed which may cause increased verbosity when switching between apps in Windows 11. The fix for "pane" announcement issue when switching apps is not affected.

  • The Windows 11 support notice dialog for stable add-on releases and a startup message for detecting Windows 11 are removed.

Version 21.09

  • On systems running Windows Server releases such as Server 2022, a warning dialog will be presented when installing the add-on as most modern apps such as Microsoft Store are not present in server systems, thereby limiting add-on features.
  • When using Add-on Updater to update this add-on on unsupported Windows releases, the warning dialog will resemble the one shown when installing the add-on manually by being specific about minimum supported Windows release.
  • Removed dedicated search field support and transferred suggestions count announcement to a dedicated suggestions list view object.
  • Calculator: Added support for redesigned Calculator (version 10.2109) included in Windows 11.
