How to install the TIPI-32K into a speech synthesizer housing

It does take a little finagling to get the TIPI/32K with the Raspberry Pi installed into the speech housing, especially if you've installed one or both of the right angle adapters for mouse and rear facing Raspberry Pi power.

Place the speech housing top upside down on your work surface, and bring the TIPI/32K assembly into the housing from the rear of the housing.

Approach

You'll need to push the front of the Pi away from the TIPI-32K board to give it a little more clearance from the housing shelf as you slide the board assembly forward into the housing. Make sure the Raspberry Pi and the mouse adapter are clear of the housing's shelf as you slide the TIPI into the housing.

Entry

Now lift the front of the TIPI/32K board so it slots into the positioning rib that locates the front of the housing. Make sure the TIPI, the adapter and the Pi are not hung up on any internal features of the housing. Do not force it if you feel any resistance.

rib

Once the front of the board is on the front positioning rib, carefully lower the rear of the board onto the remaining rear and side locator ribs.

lower

Make sure the 44 pin edge connector is centered in the side port.

seated

Place the bottom of the housing on the assembly and tighten the two joining screws.

Flip the unit over and verify the Raspberry Pi (and the mouse adapter if used) are clear of the speech door shelf.

External Pi power

If you're planning to power the Raspberry Pi externally, you'll need to use a right angle Micro USB adapter to the Pi and add a hole to the rear of the speech housing. The picture below shows an example access hole. The upper left hole is for the Pi. See Raspberry-PI-power for details.

Hole

The lower right hole is for TIPI/32K power, but this is not needed for the default configuration where the TIPI/32K is powered by the console and is not recommended as it works just fine running off console power.

TIPI/32K LED install

If you want your TIPI/32K LED visible outside the housing, you'll need to drill a hole through the housing and push the LED through the hole before the housing bottom is installed.

Use the picture below as a guide for where to drill the hole.

That's it. Now plug your TIPI/32K into your TI-99/4A console! For details on how to install and bring up your TIPI/32K, see the tipi-32k-installation page.
