Each issue of the journal contains the following sections:
- Front matter
- Masthead
- Table of contents
- Publication information
- Articles
- Each issue contains 5-6 articles
- Articles are between 8,000 and 10,000 words (including notes)
- Once per year, one of the articles is an original translation of a piece of media studies scholarship, as selected by the SCMS translation committee
- Once per year, one of the articles is the winning student essay in the SCMS essay contest, as selected by the SCMS student essay award committee
- In Focus
- Edited by a guest editor
- Consists of 5-7 short essays on a theme and an introduction by the guest editor
- Editor’s introduction is approximately 2,000 words; authors’ essays are approximately 2,500 words
- In Focus section is therefore approximately 17,000 words
- Book reviews
- Consists of 4–6 book reviews
- Each review is approximately 1,500–2,000 words
- Total for book reviews section is approximately 12,000 words
- Back matter
- Each section contains its own author bios
- Table of contents for the forthcoming issue
- Information about the Society
