T‐Scann 8 mods - jareff-g/ALT-Scann8 GitHub Wiki

In this page you can find some changes and additions I have done to the great original design of Torulf. Items are ordered from essential to nice to have.

  • Pich Roller: Essential. After experiencing some issues with the film sliding on the capstan, I decided to try the same mechanism old cassette players used: Having another cylinder (apparently named pinch roller) putting pressure against the capstan. As long as you clean regularly both the capstan and the pinch roller (soap and water only) it does the job.
  • Focus Helper: Important. Allows focusing the scanner using a knob, much easier than manually moving the lens plate part back and forth by hand.
  • Micro-switch for traction switch: Necessary. This allows for a more solid traction switch, and as side benefit it makes easier to hide the cables below the panel. However you might want to try the new design of Torulf, I have not tried it but it looks a quite clever design.
  • Modular Film gate: Practical. Film gate in three pieces, that can be assembled without any glue. The purpose is to allow it to be disassembled for maintenance, mainly to replace the aluminium paper when it wears out.
    • 🆕 Added replacement for phototrans-upper and protection, lighter and more light-proof than the original. Requires a specific photo-transistor, more details in Thingiverse.
  • Silent Rewind wheels: Practical. The default rewind wheels, in my scanner at least, were quite noisy when rewinding long films. This modification, using a couple of small bearings in each wheel, solves that problem.
  • Reel support: Nice to Have. Alternate film wheels for T-Scann 8. These are made of two elements so that only the central part needs to be printed in high resolution. Also you have the choice to pick specific S8/R8 for that central part, to avoid use of adapters.
