Deleting Drive Partitions
Creating GParted USB using Rufus
Plug it in
Log into SuperMicro, restart it
When you get to this screen, mash F11
At the boot menu, select the UEFI USB
At the GNU GRUB screen, select the default option - GParted Live (Default Settings)
Select default - Don't touch keymap
Just hit enter for both of these selections to choose the defaults
Wait a few minutes, and you should get to a screen like this showing all of your device's paritions
Go ahead and delete all the partitions in sda with Rclick->Delete until there is only unallocated left
You will need to repeat this for all onboard service devices. Make sure you do not erase the partitions from your USB disk beccause it will make GParted crash. In my case, there was only one onboard storage device, sda (sdb was my USB drive)
Once all the partitions are gone, click the green check mark and then apply to start the wipe
After completion, it should look something like this:
After this, you may restart the SuperMicro, but don't forget to remove the USB. When finished, it should boot into a screen like this:
Deliverable 1. Submit a screenshot only unallocated space in the partition table.
(I only have 1 drive)
Reflection
This lab was very simple and straightforward, just wiping everything and preparing the server to be used by the next class. I had never actually used the standalone version of GParted before, so that experience was interesting and valuable. A long time ago, my father and I would use something called MiniTool to delete partitions and clear data on old computers. I enjoyed this class a lot, learning about some different virtualization platforms. I am looking forward to applying what I have learned to my homelab environment, which currently only uses physical computers.
