Glossary should be brief overview, links to in-depth definitions elsewhere.

Categories: The top level categories used to organize content on your site. We recommend using no more than 8 to 12 categories for your content so think about the top level buckets you might use to group your content and especially how visitors might browse your site. Topic-based categories tend to be more useful than content types (so, "Politics" is more meaningful to a first-time visitor than "Investigations").
Options:

  • Name: The name is how it appears on your site.
  • Slug: The URL-friendly version of the name. It is usually all lowercase and contains only letters, numbers, and hyphens.
  • Parent: Drop-down of other categories
  • Description: The description is not prominent by default; however, some themes may show it.
  • Archive Sidebar: The sidebar to show on this term's archive, chosen from a list of sidebars. Additional sidebars can be created in *Appearance > Theme Options > Layout Options > Sidebar Options > by entering names of new sidebars in the box.

Post Prominence: Used to determine which posts to display on the homepage or in featured posts widgets in the sidebar and footer. You might also add additional categories to this taxonomy to create custom feeds for distribution to content partners.
Options:

  • Name: The name is how it appears on your site.

  • Parent: Drop-down of other post prominences
  • Description: The description is not prominent by default; however, some themes may show it.

Defaults:

  • Featured in Category
    • Description: This will allow you to designate a story to appear more prominently on category archive pages.
    • Slug: category-featured
  • Featured in Series
    • Description: Select this option to allow this post to float to the top of any/all series landing pages sorting by Featured first.
    • Slug: series-featured
  • Footer Featured Widget
    • Description: If you are using the Footer Featured Posts widget, add this label to posts to determine which to display in the widget.
    • Slug: footer-featured
  • Homepage Featured
    • Description: If you are using the Newspaper or Carousel optional homepage layout, add this label to posts to display them in the featured area on the homepage.
    • Slug: homepage-featured
  • Top Story
    • Description: If you are using the Newspaper or Carousel optional homepage layout, add this label to a post to make it the top story on the homepage
    • Slug: top-story
    • Parent: homepage-featured
  • Sidebar Featured Widget
    • Description: If you are using the Sidebar Featured Posts widget, add this label to posts to determine which to display in the widget.
    • Slug: sidebar-featured

Post Types: Post types are a way of labeling posts with a particular type, such as "Data reporting" or "Transcripts." Each post type can have an icon, which will be used in certain places in the theme. Each post type also has its own archive.
Options:

  • Name: The name is how it appears on your site.
  • Slug: The URL-friendly version of the name. It is usually all lowercase and contains only letters, numbers, and hyphens.
  • Parent: Drop-down of other post types
  • Description: The description is not prominent by default; however, some themes may show it.
  • Term icon: The icon the theme may use with the term. Options are: Search, Mail, Heart, Heart Empty, Star, Star Empty, Videocam, Picture, Camera, Ok, Cancel, Plus, Minus, Help, Home, Link, Tag, Tags, Download, Print, Comment, Chat, Location, Doc Text, Doc Text Inv, Phone, Menu, Calendar, Headphones, Play, Table, Chart Bar, Spinner, Map, Share, Gplus, Pinterest, Cc, Flickr, Linkedin, Rss, Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, Github, Itunes, Tumblr, Instagram

Series: A collection of related posts, arranged chronologically.
Options:

  • Name: The name is how it appears on your site.
  • Slug: The URL-friendly version of the name. It is usually all lowercase and contains only letters, numbers, and hyphens.
  • Parent: Drop-down of other series
  • Description: The description is not prominent by default; however, some themes may show it.
  • Archive Sidebar: The sidebar to show on this term's archive, chosen from a list of sidebars. Additional sidebars can be created in *Appearance > Theme Options > Layout Options > Sidebar Options > by entering names of new sidebars in the box.

Tags: Keywords or topics used to group related posts together on a more micro level. For example, you might have a category called "Politics" and posts in that category might have tags like "Campaign Finance", "Election 2012", etc. New tags can be created in the post editor or in Posts > Tags > Add New Tag.
