Getting Started

Requirements

  • Linux with a Wayland or X11 desktop, GTK 4.14 or later and libadwaita 1.5 or later
  • or Windows 10 version 1809 or later, 64-bit (GTK is included in the download)
  • OpenGL 3.3
  • To build from source: Rust 1.92 or later (the gtk-rs crates set this, not veetee itself)

Ubuntu 26.04: the PPA

On Ubuntu 26.04 (resolute) veetee is in a PPA, which is the easiest route and keeps it updated along with everything else:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:issinoho/veetee
sudo apt install veetee

Only 26.04 is offered. Earlier Ubuntu releases cannot build veetee at all: the gtk-rs crates require Rust 1.92, and 24.04's archive tops out at rustc-1.91. On those, use the .deb from a release, or the Flatpak.

Install a release

Each release has:

  • veetee_VERSION-1_amd64.deb — for Debian and Ubuntu:
    sudo apt install ./veetee_1.9.1-1_amd64.deb

  • veetee-VERSION-1.x86_64.rpm — for Fedora, RHEL and openSUSE (from 0.8.12):
sudo dnf install ./veetee-1.9.1-1.x86_64.rpm # zypper on openSUSE

It asks for its libraries by soname rather than by package name, so the one package suits them all, whatever each calls the thing holding libgtk-4.so.1.
  • veetee-VERSION-x86_64-linux.tar.gz — unpack anywhere and run bin/veetee; GTK 4 and libadwaita must already be installed (sudo apt install libgtk-4-1 libadwaita-1-0).
  • veetee-VERSION-x86_64.flatpak — for any Linux distribution with Flatpak (from 0.8.1):
    flatpak install --user ./veetee-1.9.1-x86_64.flatpak
    flatpak run com.issinoho.Veetee

It needs the GNOME runtime from Flathub, which flatpak install fetches. See Flatpak below.
  • veetee-VERSION-x86_64-windows.zip — unzip anywhere and run bin\veetee.exe. See Windows.

See Releases for checksums and details.

Flatpak

The Flatpak runs in a sandbox, with these differences from the other packages:

  • Local shells, --command and --ssh run on the host through flatpak-spawn --host, so they use your own login shell, files, PATH and ~/.ssh. Telnet and serial lines are handled inside veetee as usual.
  • Settings are separate: saved connections, Set-Up and the keymap are kept in ~/.var/app/com.issinoho.Veetee/config/veetee rather than ~/.config/veetee.
  • Files: logs and recordings can be written anywhere in your home folder.

To build it yourself:

flatpak install --user flathub org.gnome.Sdk//50 org.freedesktop.Sdk.Extension.rust-stable//25.08
flatpak-builder --user --install --force-clean build packaging/flatpak/com.issinoho.Veetee.yml

Build from source

On Linux:

sudo apt install libgtk-4-dev libadwaita-1-dev libasound2-dev # Ubuntu / Debian (ALSA for sound)
git clone https://github.com/issinoho/veetee.git
cd veetee
cargo build --release -p veetee
./target/release/veetee

On Windows, build in an MSYS2 UCRT64 shell:

pacman -S mingw-w64-ucrt-x86_64-{rust,gcc,pkgconf,gtk4,libadwaita}
cargo build --release -p veetee -p vt-headless
packaging/windows/bundle.sh # optional: a zip with the GTK runtime

First run

With no arguments veetee starts your login shell (Command Prompt on Windows) as a VT420:

veetee
veetee --telnet vms1 # Telnet to an OpenVMS host
veetee --ssh system@vms1 # SSH through your OpenSSH client
veetee --serial /dev/ttyUSB0 # a serial console at 9600 8N1 (--serial COM3 on Windows)
veetee --model vt525 --telnet vms1 # a colour VT525 (vt100 … vt525)
veetee --model vt520 --sessions 4 --telnet vms1 # four sessions, two on the screen; F4
veetee --record vms1.vtrec --telnet vms1 # record the session for replay
veetee --help # every option
veetee --version # which veetee this is (-v)

The Linux packages install manual pages too: man veetee and man vt-headless.

Next: Connections, Keyboard, OpenVMS.
