Cloning Z butt parts - imyownyear/Z-Butt GitHub Wiki

3D printed parts can be fragile and if your not printing your own parts can get expensive to replace regularly.

Luckily it is easy to make copys of all your Zbutt parts with the materials and tools you already use.

You will need:

  • The Zbutt part to be cloned, this will work for the master base / sculpting base or stem cavity.
  • Your choice of silicone - you need approximately ~35-40g of silicone per 1u clone mould
  • Either a 3d printed Zbutt clone no hassle container
  • Or Lego
  • Or some sheet material and hot glue to make your own mould box

If you are using Lego you will need to make a 5x5 pip box to leave space around the edge of the part you are cloning. If you are making your own box aim for around 40-50mm square. 2

Next you will need to make a small platform to raise the part away from the floor - modeling clay works well for this. 4 5

If you are using the 3D printed Clone kit you can use the clone riser part instead. 1 3

Once you've made your box, pour the silicone around the part, covering it entirely. - You should aim to have around 3-5mm of silicone over the top of the highest point of the part you are moulding

The resulting mold should look like this

Once you've created your mold, anytime you cast and have some extra resin, you can pour the leftover into your mold and set it alongside your casts in your pressure pot. This will allow you to gradually increase the number of parts you have on hand and prevent needing to print or order more parts when a sprue eventually breaks.
