Linux on Desktop
Here are my random notes on Linux on Desktop (see also GNOME and KDE).
Virtualization
- still best is
virt-manager
Failure:
gnome-boxes
is big joke - it randomly freezes, sometimes it is unable to display running VM properly (especially when using 3D acceleration). Focus problems...
RDP client
I have serious issues with these clients:
gnome-connections
- after Alt-Tab forth and back random modifier keys (including Alt) get stuck- KDE:
krdpc
(?) - totally corrupted screen on Fedora 41 Wayland - unusable
Winner:
- Remmina (notice 2 "em"!) - works perfectly, has every feature I image to use
KeePass
I use:
- Mono + original C# KeePass for Windows (under openSUSE LEAP 15.6)
- or KeePassXC (on Fedora 41).
MS Paint equivalent
It is tricky:
- I use gThumb for Crop & Resize
For anything advanced I use Krita (it support Texts, Rectangles and even arrows in Vector layer).
Failed programs:
- myPaint - does not offer Crop (only weird Frame)
- mtPaint - does not allow drawing arrows and/or rectangles
Video player
mpv
- fastest best acceleration (there are also various GUI frontends for it)vlc
- second best whenmpv
fails
Total failure:
- Totem - forces you to maximize Video on screen, does not allow 1:1 (original size playback), because its authors are...
Audio player
Mostly using:
- Audacious
- QMMP
Terminals
- xfce-terminal (under openSUSE LEAP 15.6 + XFCE)
- Konsole under KDE (yes, it is good enough)
- Terminator (I like handy tiled layout presets).
- gnome-terminal - NOTE: to set bold font on terminal, you have to set bold font in system with GNOME tweaks and then configure GNOME Terminal to use system settings
- Ptyxis (Fedora default)
