Practitioner Reassignment

Practitioner reassignment covers the process of assigning a different consultant to a session — for example, when a locum doctor covers for an absent consultant, or when administrative corrections are needed.

Scenarios

Scenario Recommended Approach
Regular consultant is on leave; locum takes over their sessions Reassign the session instance to the locum consultant
A booking was made under the wrong consultant Transfer the booking to the correct consultant's session
A consultant's schedule is permanently taken over by another doctor Update the master session template with the new consultant

Reassigning a Session Instance to a Different Consultant

When a locum covers for a session:

  1. Go to Menu → Channelling → Channel Scheduling → Channel Session Management.
  2. Select the speciality and the original consultant.
  3. Select the session template and then the specific session instance date.
  4. In the session instance details panel, change the Consultant / Staff field to the locum doctor.
  5. Save the change.

The session instance now shows the locum's name. The Channel Booking screen reflects the updated consultant for that date. Existing bookings in the session are not affected — patients remain booked; they will simply see a different doctor.

Updating the Master Schedule Template

If a consultant permanently transfers their sessions to another doctor:

  1. Go to Channel Schedule Management.
  2. Select the session template.
  3. Change the Doctor / Consultant field to the new doctor.
  4. Save.

Future session instances generated from this template will use the new consultant. Existing instances retain the original consultant unless individually updated.

Transferring Individual Bookings

If a specific patient's booking needs to move to a different consultant's session (not just the same session with a different doctor), use the Transfer or Reschedule workflow.

Notifications

The system does not automatically notify patients of a consultant change. If SMS notifications are configured, a manual notification should be sent to affected patients. See SMS Notifications in Channelling.
