A Reaction is a phenomenon that can occur when one or more specific Powers exists inside the Crucible, and certain other conditions are also met. When a player is near a reaction, the associated Journal entry (under 'Reactions') is unlocked; if they observed it without any extraneous Powers present, its formula will also be unlocked. Discovering these reactions is another of the major wings of the mod's intended experience.

Reaction Stimuli

A stimulus is a kind of external influence that a Reaction won't happen without. Each Reaction has exactly one.

Stimuli Requirement
Gold Symbol There must be a Gold Symbol somewhere within the Crucible's range.
Electric Charge The Crucible must be electrified (for example by a Volt Cell).
No Electric Charge Inverse of above.
End Crystal There must be an End Crystal within range of the Crucible.
None There are no extra requirements.

List of Reactions

A full description of the generated reactions follows.

Annihilation

Occurs when opposing Base Powers are present together. The two Powers annihilate. There are three annihilation reactions, assigned randomly to the three pairs of opposing powers.

  • Discharge - A bolt of energy strikes and damages living things.
  • Smoke - Noxious fumes poison and weaken surrounding living things.
  • Salt - Apprentice's Salts are formed. If the power balance is high enough, the Crucible crusts over completely, voiding all Power.

Synthesis

Occurs when certain adjacent Base Powers are present. Each of these require the Electric Charge stimuli, and each of the three produces a different Esoteric Power.

In some worlds there also exists a synthesis reaction with no stimulus that forms Verdant out of Vital and Body or, alternatively, Vital out of Verdant and Light.

Finally, combining all three Esoteric Powers causes a synthesis that creates Astral Power.

Assimilation

A Power consumes other Powers. Curse is the main example, having a special assimilation reaction with all Powers, but others do exist.

  • Vital assimilates Body
  • Acid assimilates Vital
  • In some worlds, Vital consumes Verdant or the other way around.

Decomposition

One power converts into one or more other Powers.

Depending on the world, Warp decomposes to Soul with the stimuli from an End Crystal, or vice versa. Also, without electric charge, a random one of the Esoteric Powers will decompose back into its component Base Powers.

Version 9+ only

Omen decomposes into Soul and Curse under a Golden Symbol, and instantly changes to Soul if exposed to Blaze.

Effect

Uses one or more kinds of Power to cause some effect. Most of the time, these reactions consume their requisite Power, but some do not.

Creation

Version 8+ only

Annihilating Astral and Curse causes a special Effect Reaction that creates blocks of Unformed Matter in a world-specific arrangement above the Crucible. You can see where it will happen by the spheres of stardust particles. If you aren't seeing any, try clearing some blocks, as they only appear if the site is unobstructed.
