Use prebuild self install image - henrikstengaard/hstwb-installer GitHub Wiki

Prebuild self install images build with HstWB Installer are ready to install and can run using an Amiga emulator or on a real Amiga.

There's following differences between how self install can be run:

  • Using an Amiga emulator:
    • Fast using JIT emulation and supports automated installation of Amiga OS 3.1 from adf files and floppy disks, Amiga OS 3.9 from cd-rom or iso file, Kickstart rom files, packages and user packages.
    • Recommended for most users.
  • Using a real Amiga:
    • Requires image file is first written to disk to be installed in a real Amiga.
    • Slow and supports only automated installation of Amiga OS 3.1 from floppy disks and packages.
    • Recommended for advanced users only.

Prerequisites

Running self install using an Amiga emulator has following prerequisites:

  1. Amiga OS and Kickstart roms:
    • Cloanto Amiga Forever is installed or cd/dvd-rom iso is mounted for automatically detect and install Amiga OS and Kickstart roms.
    • Own dumps of Amiga OS and Kickstart roms.
    • A1200 Kickstart 3.1 rom is required to self install.
  2. WinUAE and FS-UAE installed and started once to create default configuration directories for installation of UAE and FS-UAE config files. This is required for HstWB image setup script can detect and install Amiga emulator configuration files.

Running self install using a real Amiga has following prerequisites:

  1. Amiga with Kickstart 3.1 roms installed.
  2. Amiga OS 3.1 floppy disks.
  3. CF/SD-card, SSD or harddisk to write self install image to.

Download

Prebuild self install images can be downloaded from https://hstwb.firstrealize.com and are available in different Amiga harddrive image sizes to support as many Amiga models and hardware configurations as possible.

Following prebuild self install images can be downloaded:

  1. 4GB HstWB self install image.
    • Recommended for users limited to 4GB by real Amiga hardware configurations.
  2. 8GB HstWB self install image.
  3. 16GB HstWB self install image:
    • Recommended for most users as most demos and games can be installed.
  4. 32GB HstWB self install image.
  5. 64GB HstWB self install image.

The choice of prebuild self install image depends what's going to be installed and how the image it used. To install most demos and games minimum 16GB is recommended.

The prebuild self install images are sized, so they can be written to various brands of CF/SD cards, SSD and harddisks.

Preparing self install

To run self install images using an Amiga emulator, they must first be prepared. Required Amiga OS and Kickstart rom files must be copied to self install directories, optional user packages can be prepared and Amiga emulator configuration files must be updated with paths to harddrive images.

A self install image uses following self install directories for required and optional files:

  • "workbench": Directory with Amiga OS 3.1 adf files.
  • "kickstart": Directory with Kickstart rom files.
  • "os39": Directory with Amiga OS 3.9 iso and Boing Bag 1 & 2 files.
  • "userpackages": Directory with user packages.

Required Amiga OS adf and Kickstart rom files can be prepared with following methods:

  1. Cloanto Amiga Forever:
    • Automatically detect and install Amiga OS and Kickstart roms in self install directories.
    • Recommended for most users.
  2. Own dumps:
    • Manually copy and install Amiga OS and Kickstart roms in self install directories.
    • Recommended for advanced users only.

Cloanto Amiga Forever

Cloanto Amiga Forever can be used to automatically detect and install Amiga OS and Kickstart roms with following methods:

  1. Install Cloanto Amiga Forever.
  2. Mount Cloanto Amiga Forever cd/dvd-rom iso:
    • Windows 8, 8.1 and 10:
      1. Open Windows Explorer.
      2. Right-click Cloanto Amiga Forever cd/dvd-rom iso selecting "Open with" and "Windows Explorer".
    • Windows 7:
      1. Install WinCDEmu from http://wincdemu.sysprogs.org.
      2. Right-click Cloanto Amiga Forever cd/dvd-rom iso selecting "Open with" and "WinCDEmu mounter".
      3. From WinCDEmu mounter dialog click "OK".
    • macOS:
      1. Open macOS Finder.
      2. Right-click Cloanto Amiga Forever cd/dvd-rom iso selecting "Open With" and "DiskImageMounter".
    • Ubuntu:
      1. Open Ubuntu Files.
      2. Right-click Cloanto Amiga Forever cd/dvd-rom iso selecting "Open With" and "Disk Image Mounter".
    • Linux:
      1. Open terminal or shell.
      2. Type sudo mkdir -p /media/cdrom and press enter to create directory for mounting iso.
      3. Type sudo mount -o loop /home/user/af_dvd.iso /media/cdrom and press enter to mount iso in created directory for mounting iso.

Own dumps

Own dumps of Amiga OS and Kickstart roms can manually be copied and installed following steps:

  1. Copy Amiga OS 3.1 adf files to "workbench" directory.
  2. Copy Kickstart rom files to "kickstart" directory.

Amiga OS adf and Kickstart rom files are detected using MD5 checksums, so filenames are ignored.

Amiga OS 3.9

Self install images can automatically install Amiga OS 3.9 and Boing Bag 1 & 2.

Configuring and installing Amiga OS 3.9 is optional and can be skipped, if Amiga Os 3.9 doesn't apply to the self install image being prepared.

Following Amiga OS 3.9 files are supported (case insensitive):

Copy and install files for Amiga OS 3.9 installation with following steps:

  1. Copy "AmigaOS3.9.iso" to "os39" directory for automated installation of Amiga OS 3.9.
  2. Copy "BoingBag39-1.lha" to "os39" directory for automated installation of Boing Bag 1.
  3. Copy "BoingBag39-2.lha" to "os39" directory for automated installation of Boing Bag 2.

User packages

Self install images can install user packages with additional content.

Configuring and installing user packages is optional and can be skipped, if user packages doesn't apply to the self install image being prepared.

Self install images comes with following built-in user packages:
