🧮 Standalone Calculators - heinsch-fa/behave-app GitHub Wiki
📖 In This Section
- Core Objective: Launch individual tool for rapid environmental computations.
- Estimated Reading Time: 4 minutes.
- Prerequisites: Familiarize yourself with the 💻 Interface Overview panel locations.
🧭 Functional Overview
The standalone Tools from older software versions are consolidated into the Calculators button. These features are completely separate from your primary run file. They allow you to rapidly evaluate immediate field metrics, but you cannot yet use them in a run or save them for future use.
[!WARNING]
⚠️ Critical Constraint: Data Loss Warning
Calculators cannot save data. Once you close an open calculator window, all entered metrics and calculated values are permanently deleted. If you need to retain these values, you must take a manual desktop screenshot before closing the window.
🛠️ Step-by-Step Instructions
1️⃣ Launching and Running an Engine
Open a calculator block, configure its environment fields, and trigger the math engine.
- Action Required: Click the orange calculator icon ( 🧮 ) on the Left Panel to open the selection directory
- Action Required: Click the radio button next to your target tool to launch it in the central Working Area.
- Action Required: Populate the required parameter fields, then click Compute.
- Technical Constraint: Only one calculator tool can be open at a time.

🔍 Calculator Selection Directory Menu🖼️ 🔍
- Select a Calculator from the list to open it. It opens in the Working Area. Only one Calculator can be open at a time.
- Calculators cannot be saved at this time, so be sure to take a screenshot of it to save the results. Once you close a Calculator, the information is deleted. In the future, we plan to save these outputs with the associated run.
There are six calculators related to fire behavior.
- Probability of Ignition: Calculates the likelihood of fire starting from a firebrand. It is also available as a core component inside all four master Run Types.
- 1-Hour Fuel Moisture: Replicates the traditional reference tables found in the IRPG, NWCG Fire Behavior Field Reference Guide (PMS-437), and Guide to Fire Behavior Assessment (PMS-437-1).
- Note: This is the only calculator that updates automatically using sequential drop-down selections instead of a manual Compute button.
- Slope from Map Measurements: Computes topographical slope as a percentages and in absolute degrees using map scale, paper map distance, contour intervals, and boundary interval counts.
- Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD): Evaluates air dryness trends by calculating atmospheric pressure deficits. Requires Air Temperature and Relative Humidity input values.
- Relative Humidity: Calculates immediate localized air humidity thresholds using Dry Bulb Temperature, Wet Bulb Temperature, and exact Site Elevation. Outputs from this module provide one of the required inputs for the 1-Hour Fuel Moisture matrix.
- Safe Separation Distance & Safety Zone Size: Applies recent research modeling the combined effect of radiant and convective energy transfer to better protect resources. Inputs include 20-ft Wind Speed, Slope Class, Burning Condition, and Vegetation Height.
