Hack for LA is creating a Research Ethics Handbook. The handbook will walk researchers through the various stages of the data collection process by using real-life examples.
We invite you to contribute by sharing some of your stories of negative and/or triggering moments you encountered as a researcher in the research interview process. We hope they will become valuable teaching moments and increase visibility over how an interviewer's race, socioeconomic background, gender, sexuality, disability, religion, and status as a ESL/multilingual speaker can shape the interview process.
-
Identifying information such as names or email addresses will not be collected. All responses will be anonymous.
-
This survey should take approximately 15 minutes of your time.
-
Participation is voluntary and there is no compensation.
-
This study may have no benefits to you. Organizations engaging in research and society may benefit by understanding the daily realities of researchers. There are no known risks beyond the possible loss of confidentiality.
-
Data will be kept confidential. It will be encrypted and stored in a password protected repository. Only the researchers involved in this study and those responsible for research oversight will have access to responses.
-
Please feel free to ask any questions about anything you don't understand at [email protected].
-
To know more about your rights as a research participant, please refer to the UCLA Research Participant Bill of Rights
-
The Research Ethics Handbook will be published in open-source format.
- If you would like to receive updates on the progress of this project and publication, please bookmark this page and check in periodically.

Q Title: Share the story
- What are common negative or triggering experiences researchers encounter while conducting qualitative research?
-
Q Title: Advice
- What advice would researchers recommend to their peers to navigate and manage similar negative or triggering research experiences?
-
Q Title: Organizational Support
- What kind of organizational support (past, current, or future) would researchers desire to protect them from such negative or triggering experiences?
-
Q Title: Age
- How old were the researchers when the negative or triggering experience happened?
-
Q Title: Years of Experience
- How many years of experience in research interviews have the researchers had when the negative or triggering experience happened?
-
Q Title: Perspective
- How have researchers' perspectives changed since the negative or triggering experience happened?

-
Q Titles: Feedback
- If the researchers indicated that they did not wish to take this survey. If there is anything they would like to share regarding this decision, please add it here. (This is completely optional and will be used by the research team to understand any concerns participants may have about the survey.) If the participant leaves a response, they are consenting to the research team reading, reviewing, and analyzing their response to improve the quality of the survey
-
Q Titles: Additional Information - story
- Please provide any additional information that would give more context to the story the researchers provided.
-
Q Titles: Additional Information - other
- Please provide any comments that researchers have regarding this survey, our messaging, or any other related aspects
Deliver a survey which will provide real-life examples to inform the analysis and contribute to the development of guidelines in Hack for LA's Research Ethics Guide. Additionally, the stories and experiences shared may be utilized in group discussions for research teams preparing to initiate new projects, helping to foster ethical and thoughtful research practices.
- Other: Outside Researchers
Data will be collected using a voluntary, anonymous, open-ended qualitative survey. Participants will have the flexibility to respond only to the questions they choose, as none of the questions are mandatory. The survey will remain open for a three-month period to allow ample time for participants to provide their responses.

Share your story for the Hack for LA Research Ethics Handbook!
:😫 Working as a researcher can be stressful. As individuals invested in learning more about human experiences, we must remain flexible and open to spontaneous interactions. While the data collection process can be fascinating and engaging, it is not always a smooth process.
:🔴 Unfortunately, sometimes our work leaves researchers vulnerable to negative experiences such as racism and other forms of harassment.
:💡 In efforts to advocate for, suggest, and provide better organizational policies and protocols to support and protect researchers, we are collecting stories of any negative and/or triggering moments you experienced during the data collection process.
:✍ If this is a topic that you feel comfortable sharing anonymously, we invite you to contribute your story.
:🙊Identifying information such as names or email addresses will not be collected. All responses will be anonymous.
:⏰ This survey should take approximately 15 minutes of your time.
