Crossreferences - gryphonshafer/Bible GitHub Wiki

While the source content is nearly complete by this point, there is still a lot of important work required. This work phase is where crossreferences get added. Software will analyze each verse and generate a set of likely crossreferences for the verse. This list will not necessarily be exhaustive and will have crossreferences that should be omitted.

Consider the following possible content from Titus 2:2 that may come out of the previous work phase:

|2| Aged men ^should^ be temperate, sensible, discreet, ^and^ sound
in the faith, in love, ^and^ in patience. [or ^perseverance,
steadfastness, endurance^]

# 1 Corinthians 13:1
# If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have
# love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

# 2 Corinthians 11:14
# And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.

# 1 Timothy 3:2
# Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife,
# temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach.

# 1 Timothy 5:1
# Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were
# your father. Treat younger men as brothers.

# Titus 1:13
# This saying is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they
# will be sound in the faith.

# 1 John 4:16
# And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love.
# Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

Notice that the software has automatically identified 6 possible crossreferences for Titus 2:2. However, those crossreferences need to be checked and inserted appropriately into the verse content in OBML. Any line that starts with a "#" character in OBML is a comment, which will be ignored. Also note that the crossreferences will be displaying NIV content, not translated content from this project. We won't be using the NIV content at all.

The work of this phase involves moving the verse references of appropriate crossreferences up into the verse in the most appropriate locations within the verse. Looking at 1 Corinthians 13:1, the verse references "love," and therefore it should be a crossreferences after the word "love" in Titus 2:2. The same goes for 1 John 4:16. 1 Timothy 5:1 talks about "an older man," which is NIV for "aged men," so 1 Timothy 5:1 belongs just after that phrase at the beginning of the verse. Note also that 2 Corinthians 11:14 doesn't make any sense with regard to Titus 2:2, so it should be dropped.

The resulting output for this phase might be:

|2| Aged men {1 Timothy 5:1} ^should^ be temperate, sensible,
discreet, ^and^ sound in the faith, {Titus 1:13} in love,
{1 Cor 13:1; 1 John 4:16} ^and^ in patience. [or ^perseverance,
steadfastness, endurance^] {1 Tim 3:2}

Notice that it's acceptable to use "Timothy" or "Tim". "Cor" can be substituted for "Corinthians". When the OBML strict processor runs on this verse, it will result in:

|2| Aged men {1Tm 5:1} ^should^ be temperate, sensible, discreet,
^and^ sound in the faith, {Ti 1:13} in love, {1Co 13:1; 1Jn 4:16}
^and^ in patience. [or ^perseverance, steadfastness, endurance^]
{1Tm 3:2}
