Sponsorship and Donations - grgcnnr/LoT GitHub Wiki

Beyond grants, the Library of Things can be supported through business sponsorship, item donations, and in-kind contributions.

Business Sponsorship

Why Businesses Should Sponsor the LoT

Local businesses — particularly those in the home improvement and hardware sector — have a genuine alignment with the Library of Things:

  • Brand association with a community good-news story
  • Community goodwill in their local market
  • Staff engagement through volunteering opportunities
  • Reaching their customers — LoT members are exactly the kind of people who shop at hardware stores

Addressing the Retailer Concern

A common question is whether a tool library competes with retailers. The evidence from similar organisations suggests the opposite: a Library of Things expands the market for tools.

  • People who borrow a tool and discover they use it regularly are more likely to buy their own
  • The LoT introduces people to tools and equipment they didn't know existed — and creates new customers
  • The LoT allows people to "try before they buy" and gives them the skills and confidence with the items making them more likely to purchase when ready

Sponsorship Benefits to Offer

A sponsorship package could include:

  • Logo placement on the LoT website, social media, and in the library space
  • Acknowledgement in grant applications and annual reports
  • Staff volunteer day opportunity
  • First mover status — early sponsors get recognition as founding supporters
  • Community PR — press release opportunities, social media tagging

Item Donations

Items in the Library of Things will come from a mix of purchased goods (funded by grants) and community donations.

Community Donation Appeal

Once the library is ready to receive items, a community appeal for quality second-hand tools and equipment will be a key source of inventory. This should be:

  • Promoted through social media, local community groups, and council channels
  • Targeted at specific categories where there is high demand (e.g. power tools, camping gear)
  • Clear about what is and isn't accepted (TBD: Where is the biggest need? What should we stock first?)

Business Donations

Hardware stores, trade businesses, and equipment suppliers may have:

  • Surplus or ex-display stock
  • Returned items that can't be resold as new
  • Equipment that has been superseded

These are valuable sources of quality items and should be actively pursued as part of the business sponsorship conversations.

Item Acceptance Policy

Not all donated items will be suitable for the library. Before any item is added to the inventory, it should be assessed for:

  • Safety — electrical items need to be tested; sharp tools need to be in safe condition
  • Functionality — the item should work as intended
  • Completeness — all parts, accessories, and instructions should be present where applicable
  • Condition — items should be clean and in reasonable condition
  • Market fit - the LoT will have limited storage space, so what is accepted will have to be prioritised based on community need (research needed)

A formal item acceptance policy needs to be developed by the steering group. Partner organisations such as Menzshed may be able to assist with testing and minor repairs of donated items.
