- Things to avoid
- running in the lab
- leaving waste or reagents on the bench unlabeled
- storing glass bottles precariously
- eating and drinking in the lab (OK to eat/drink in the dry lab)
- throwing away food related items in the wet lab garbage
- incorrect waste disposal
- preparation of noxious buffers outside the fume hood
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Clothing: wear close-toed shoes, and avoid shorts and short dresses
- Wear gloves, a lab coat, and safety glasses at the bench
- Use the face shield for cutting out bands from gels with the UV on
- We also have freezer gloves and autoclave gloves
- Washing lab coats - I will look into a local service
C-14 training is required by FDNY for everyone who does benchwork in NYC. If you plan to work in the wet lab, do this training ASAP - it can take months to go through the process. If you are C-14 certified, then you can work in the lab alone. But if you are not C-14 certified, then at least one C-14 certified person must be in the lab space when you are there.
