Background

Aveparvoviruses are a genus within the Parvoviridae family, specifically classified under the Parvovirinae subfamily. This genus is primarily associated with avian hosts, particularly birds, and is of interest due to its potential implications in avian health and disease. Aveparvoviruses lack the PLA2 motif in their VP1 proteins.

The genus consists of three official members found in avian species, including Galliform aveparvovirus 1 (chicken parvovirus [ChPV] and turkey parvovirus [TuPV]), Columbid aveparvovirus 1 (pigeon parvovirus 1), and Gruiform aveparvovirus 1 (red-crowned crane parvovirus), along with a newly discovered strain in a grey pileated finch.

ChPV and TuPV are widespread in commercial poultry, with reports from various countries, but their role in disease remains uncertain as they are found in both symptomatic and healthy birds. ChPV has been linked to enteritis and conditions like runting and stunting syndrome (RSS) in chickens, characterized by poor growth and feed conversion. Experimental infections in chicks have shown that ChPV causes enteritis, diarrhea, and other symptoms, suggesting a potential causal link to enteric disease in young chickens.
