Course content

First day

  • Introduction Who is the presenter; course overview; What is OSGeo, GRASS GIS, where to find help

  • Hands-on Software installation; Course data usage; QGIS 2 Processing-GRASS GIS Integration; Quick journey with prepared location: 2D, nviz, map swipe tool; Map import and location creation (via wizard, and via command line)

Lunch break

  • Map visualization (with exercises) Visualization of vector and raster maps, scalebar, symbols, grids, color tables, histogram

  • Raster analysis (with exercises) Terrain analysis (slope, aspect, viewshed, profiles), rescaling, reclassification, NULL data, metadata

Second day

  • Vector analysis (with exercises) Geometry 1: extraction, intersection, union, dissolve, distance, generalization; Geometry 2: command line editing versus graphical digitizer; Attributes: DB backends, attribute selection (simple and SQL), updated DB records, table join; From 2D to 3D: extrusion; Metadata management

  • Vector Topology Introduction, cleaning exercise

  • Integrated vector/ raster processing; Zonal statistics

Lunch break

  • LiDAR data analysis Notes on DTM and DSM extraction

  • Raster processing (with exercises) Interpolation methods; Resampling; Reprojection of maps

Course objective

Getting started with GRASS 7. Using it for geospatial data visualization, vector and raster analysis, attribute management.

Target audience

The course requires familiarity with GIS concepts.

Preparation

Participants are requested to bring their own laptop. In order to allow for a smooth start of the course, hereby instruction for preparing your laptop beforehand. As available, we will be using the brand new release of GRASS 7.0.0 beta 1 or a GRASS 7.0 snapshot version which will be equally fine. The binary packages of the new version will become available in these days.

The new version has been packaged, you can download it as

GNU/Linux
