Methodology
We currently use a very low tech solution to managing citations. When we want to cite a paper, add it to refs.bib
, which should be in the same directory as the paper.
Instructions
0. You are addressing a ccc
(citation) in lyx
or overleaf
.
1. Check refs.bib
to verify whether a citation to the same version of this paper has already been created for a prior in-text citation. If so, skip step 2.
2. Download or create the citation and add it to refs.bib
- If the paper is published, go to the journal webpage and download the
.bibtex
citation - If the paper is not published but has been circulated as an NBER Working Paper, cite that.
- If the paper is not published and is not an NBER Working Paper, write your own citation fields. Be sure to include a hyperlink to the paper.
3. Modify the citekey
- Make sure that the citekey is made up of the following three pieces of information: the first author's last name, the year written, and the first substantive word (i.e. not "the").
- For example, after downloading the citation for this paper, the citekey should be changed to be
ganong2020liquidity
withinrefs.bib
.
4. Saving and compiling
- After completing the citation in
refs.bib
, save and go to the gnlab paper draft inlyx
oroverleaf
. Insert the in-text citation, being careful to maintain the same format in terms of parentheses, commas, and semicolons. - Then compile the document. Make sure that the citation appears as intended. Control-F for "???" to double-check that the citation is not broken.
- Now you can move onto the next
ccc
.
