Cable harness
Ballenger failed me here! The weird connector going into the MDPS (motor driven power steering) ecu is 100% proprietary but one COULD order the other end of the connector which goes into the steering unit/torque sensors. However the moq for the connector is 1000 pcs - So maybe in the future we can order that connector and save the steering connector harness. Till then, we gotta do some factory harness surgery. Not for the faint of heart! 😄
The connectors are standard 6-way compact connectors:
The idea is to snip the blue/green wires from the torque motor and make a new connector out of those. I did not snip the 4 power/gnd wires since why snip more than you need to! Its way easier to work on this wiring if you take out the other part from the steering column as well (you'll need to open up the steering cover for this).
Make your Y-connector as follows:
Bench testing
This one is actually impossible to bench test since you can't provide it with power with your Y connector. Also if the ECU does a self test thingy at startup and if it detects something funky (like no connection to torque sensors) it'll fault and shut down the power supply. One must go yolo here and trust the polysync folks 🥇
Deployment
The MDPS ECU is super sensitive to weirdness at startup. So if you are still powering your OSCC boards from the cigarette lighter, you'll have to stop doing that and extract power from the OBD2 connector. The cigarette lighter turns on too late and the OSCC boards do this relay self test in the start which really pisses the MDPS ECU off. If you keep trying like I did the ECU would eventually hard fault and then you need to attach a OBD2 code reader to clear it. You can't use a ordinary OBD2 code reader to clear this code and you must buy the GDS Tool from a Hyundai dealer for $5000.
Just kidding 😆- you can actually use this Foxwell one even though it says it doesn't support your car. Luckily kia hasn't changed the EPS stuff much for a while.
