11A511 Soyuz is the single most frequently used launch vehicle with over 1700 launches to date. Derived from the Voskhod, it was originally commissioned to launch Soyuz manned spacecraft and had the more powerful RD-0110 engine on the the Blok-I upper stage. In 1973, Soyuz-U was introduced with an uprated core and ultimately became one of the most prolific launch vehicles with over 786 missions flown. Soyuz-U optionally used an Ikar or Fregat fourth stage.

Soyuz-2 is uprated with digital flight control systems and optionally uses the Fregat or Volga upper stages. Soyuz-2.1b has an RD-0124 engine on the Blok-I upper stage. Soyuz-2.1v is a light version with no side boosters (Blok-B, V, G, D) and is powered by a NK-33 main engine with an RD-0110R for roll control.

Other variants included:

  • Soyuz-L = (1970) LEO test vehicle for LK lunar lander.
  • Soyuz-M = (1971) Originally built for military Soyuz 7K-VI but launched Zenit-4MT sats. Probably same as Soyuz-U.
  • Soyuz-U2 = (1982) Cargo and crew ferry for Mir space station. Uses Syntin fuel instead of RP-1.
  • Soyuz-FG = (2001) Improved Soyuz-U with optional Fregat fourth stage for Progress cargo missions to ISS.
