Formally designated the UR-500 (Universal Rocket 500) and renamed from association with regular payload of Proton earth observation satellites, the two stage launch vehicle has been the medium-lift workhorse of the Soviet and Russian space programs for over forty years. Proton-K was used extensively to launch Salyut, Mir and ISS modules as well as the Soyuz-LK1 manned spacecraft for the planned lunar flyby programme. Proton-M is an improved Proton-K.
