Derived from R-12 and R-14 missiles, the Kosmos family of carrier rockets made over 700 launches between 1961 and 2010. Kosmos-2I was the first operational variant, replaced by the modernised Kosmos-2M in 1965. Kosmos-1 (confusingly named) was a prototype medium carrier vehicle derived from the R-14 missile and operationalised as the Kosmos-3 and later 3M, which saw over 420 successful launches.
