Background
Saturn is the first dedicated heavy-lift space launcher. Designed specifically to launch large payloads into low orbit, it's main historical use was testing the boilerplate version of the Apollo Command & Service Modules although it was considered for launch of the X-20 Dyna-Soar spaceplane and the Gemini Big G for lunar missions.
Most of the rocket's power comes from clustered tanks and modified engines taken from older Jupiter rockets strapped together to make a single large S-I first stage. The second stage (S-IV) clusters six of the same RL-10 engines used on Centaur (BDB Inon), which gives it a relatively high ISP but low thrust-to-weight ratio.
The Saturn IB upgrade replaces the S-IV upper stage with a more powerful S-IVB driven by a single J-2 engine and features 8x advanced aerodynamic fins on the lower stage. There are a number of proposed upgrades to Saturn IB, including adding a Centaur D third stage (IB-CE), using the uprated HG-3 engine on a stretched second stage (IB-B), strapping on up to 4x UA1205 SRB's (IB-D) as used on Titan IIIE or even UA1207 SRB's on a stretched first stage (INT-11/13/14/15).

Saturn IB SRM & MLV
Saturn IB SRM was a 1966 study by UA to pitch the concept of using various combinations of solid rocket booster to augment or replace the Saturn first stage (INT-05 to INT-27). Meanwhile, NASA's Apollo Applications Program considered the Saturn IB Modified Launch Vehicle (1967) to reuse existing hardware for Earth Orbital Missions. These builds are essentially the same as Saturn IB with various stretched tanks, strap on boosters and staging setups.
