A TV Network is a distributor of television content. Historically, this was mainly through affiliate TV stations, which would serve specific geographical areas. However, with the rise of cable networks and, later, satellite TV, this historical definition no longer always applies. Now, a TV network may: provide content to many geographically distributed affiliate stations which may also provide their own programming; distribute content to smaller, partner networks; or broadcast the same content everywhere, bypassing the need for affiliate stations.
