Current Definition:

An organization is an organized body of members or people with a particular purpose; in the Freebase context, a organization doesn't have a business association, like a company. Companies have their own type in the business domain, located here. In addition, many types of organizations have their own, more specialized co-types that give them additional properties.

Proposed Definition:

An organization is an organized body of one or more human or non-human (such as: countries, companies, etc.) members with a particular purpose. In the Freebase context, an organization may not necessarily have a business association, like a company. Companies have their own type in the business domain (/business/business_operation). In addition, many types of organizations have their own, more specialized co-types that give them additional properties.

Things that are Organizations

There is a variety of organizations, including:

  • Companies, such as: Apple, Google and PSA Peugeot Citroën. All organizations that have operations with the intention of earning revenue are considered companies. These topics are also typed as /business/business_operation. Depending on the industry they currently belong, they may further be typed as:
  • Airline (/aviation/airline), such as: Air Mauritius, Air Namibia and Shorouk Air.
  • Automobile company (/automotive/company), such as: Audi, General Motors and Lamborghini.
  • Hotel operator (/travel/hotel_operator), such as: Hilton Worldwide, Holiday Inn and InterContinental Hotels Group.
