Disease Vector (/medicine/vector_of_disease)

Type Definition

A vector is an organism that carries and transmits disease by carrying infectious pathogens and transmitting them from one living organism to another.

Things that are disease vectors:

  • Insects like mosquitos, fleas, ticks.
  • Mammals like bats, white-headed capuchin, people.

Things that are not disease vectors:

  • Inanimate objects such as door knobs, tables, clothes, etc. While inanimate objects may harbour disease-causing pathogens, they are not considered vectors.
