Politician (/government/politician)


Type Definition

The politician type is used for any person who holds, has held, seeks or has sought an office or position which provides the individual the ability to vote* on or ratify changes to legislation as part of the governmental system of a nation-state or recognized region. This also includes kings, queens and other monarchs.

Things that are Politicians

  • Members of the executive branch of government in national, regional and local levels level like presidents, vice presidents, governors, vice governors, mayors, councilors, etc. (e.g. Barack Obama, Noli de Castro, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gavin Newsom).

  • Members of the legislative branch in national level like representatives, senators (e.g. Robert Adelholt, Joe Lieberman).

  • Heads of states who presided over a nation through means other than election (appointment, heredity, coup d etat, dictatorship) such prime ministers, dictators, etc. (e.g. John Howard, Kim Jong-il, Phaedon Gizikis).

  • Kings, queens, emirs and other monarchs with official political power (e.g. King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, Akihito, Elizabeth II).

  • Persons appointed to a normally elected position, because the elected person had to leave office. (E.g. Roland Burris who was appointed senator of Illinois when Barack Obama became president.)

  • Elected supreme court justices and other members of the judicial branch (e.g. Sue Bell Cobb, Terrence O'Donnell)

  • Elected law enforcers such as sheriffs and district attorneys (e.g. Cyrus Vance Jr., Lee Baca).

  • Lords and barons in a feudal system. This also includes any position during ancient or medieval times that is equivalent to modern politicians.

  • Candidates and nominees for any elected government positions.

Things that are NOT Politicians

  • Government workers who are hired or appointed such as government employees and diplomats (e.g. Anne Cox Chambers, Joyce Anne Barr).

  • Appointed members of cabinet, executive departments, government agencies and other civil servants who have not run for any electoral positions (e.g. Chris Lu, Kathleen Merrigan).

  • Appointed (not elected) members of the judicial branch, law enforcement, and military (e.g. Chase T. Rogers, William J. Bratton).

  • Members of royalty and nobility who do not hold any official political positions (e.g. Prince Charles, Sarah, Duchess of York).

  • Members of the Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council or similar councils are not politicians by virtue of their membership in the council. As most have or had political positions in the House of Commons or House of Lords, they will be politicians. But some positions such are judges and religious leaders should not be typed as politician (e.g.Rowan Williams, Lord Hamilton, Archbishop of Canterbury).

  • Activists, campaigners and lobbyists (e.g. Sandeep Pandey, Niillas Somby).
