A river is a body of water that flows toward an ocean, a bay, a lake, or another river. This type includes flowing natural and artificial waterways of any size such as rivers, streams, brooks and creeks.

• Rivers, streams and creeks (e.g. Macquarie Rivulet, Arroyo del Medio, Saladillo Stream, Prospect Creek, Bucks Burn, Nant Bran)

• Subterranean rivers (including lost rivers that are only subterranean for part of their length) (e.g. Mojave River, Lost River, River Effra, Neglinnaya River)

• Navigable waterways that include or pass through some rivers as part of their route (e.g. Elizabeth River and Halifax River are part of the Intracoastal Waterway)
