Film(/film/film)

Type Definition

Film is a release of a visual narrative composed of a series of moving images that is considered a complete presentation and is intended to be classified as a film. A film can be of any length of running time and presented in a theatrical, television, internet-streaming and direct-to-home-video presentation.

Things That Are Films

Things That Are NOT Films

  • TV Programs (e.g.: Gilligan's Island, Mahabharat, Lost).

  • Type as a TV Program.

  • TV Miniseries is a TV Program with a very small number of episodes presented over a short period of time and never re-edited and re-released as a film later (e.g.: Roots, Shogun and Rich Man, Poor Man).

  • Type as a TV Program.

  • Music Videos and Music Video Compilations may resemble films in having actors, dialogue, plot but are almost always specific promotional video(s) for a specific song(s) or set of songs if a medley (e.g.: Thriller, Girls Just Want To Have Fun, November Rain, Depeche Mode's 1988 compilation of videos called Strange).

  • As of this time we have no commons type for music videos.

  • Film series are a series of closely related films (e.g.: Looney Tunes, Three Colors, Otoko wa Tsurai yo, and James Bond film series).

  • Type as Film Series.

  • Film trailers are considered promotional material, thus are an advertisement. They may appear to be very film-like, but we classify them as an ad (promo) for the film.

  • As of this time we have no type in commons for film trailers.

Currently Typed Incorrectly

  • Shogun is a mini-series, it has been incorrectly typed as a film. It has been released as a multi-disk (or video-tape) release in the past, but not as a film as far as I can find.

  • Michael Jackson's Thriller which should be typed as a long-form music video (when we have a commons type for that).

Edge Cases

  • TV pilots for a TV series are sometimes of a longer length than the TV show's episodic run-time. Occasionally released as a film, sometimes edited into two-parters as episodes. The Homecoming: A Christmas Story was a TV movie that spawned the TV series eg. The Waltons.

  • Type as TV Episode, usually as episode #0 and possibly co-type as Film depending on the circumstances of it's initial presentation or subsequent re-release.
