A video game version is a version of a video game, published by a particular publisher for a particular platform and released in a particular region. The publishers and/or developers of different versions of a game may differ from version to version. The Video Game Version is different from the Video Game type, which describes the generalized concept of a game across all its different versions.
For instance, there is only one video game “The Sims 2”, but there are many versions of that game for different platforms (e.g. The Sims 2 for Microsoft Windows, The Sims 2 for PSP, The Sims 2 for Xbox, etc.).
We ultimately want to understand whether a video game version is the "same game" as another video game version. There are various methods and heuristics for trying to determine this identity:
-
Play the games. If they are very similar, and vary mostly because of platform differences (e.g. resolution), then they are versions of the same game.
-
Look for matching developers (e.g. 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker for Nintendo GameCube and 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker for Sega Dreamcast) or matching publishers (e.g. Ōkami).
-
Research transfer of license. See if any licensing was done among the publishers that you find for the game versions. For example, SimCity was published by Nintendo under license by Maxis.
-
Look for the same game cover art. If they are the same, there's a good chance that there was some official licensing done (e.g. Puzzlegeddon for iPhone is the same game as Puzzlegeddon for Microsoft Windows).
