A written work is any type of intellectual work expressed through writing. It is a fairly generic or abstract type that contains information common to all or most types of written works, including (but not limited to) books, plays, poems, stories, scholarly articles, book reviews, and essays.
NOTE : Written Work should not be co-typed with Publication. Please see Entering the Contents of a Book or Periodical under What is not a Written Work.

Literary works such as fiction, short stories, poems, drama, etc. (e.g. Ficciones, The Catcher in the Rye, Twilight).

Non-fiction works such as essays, reviews, articles, biographies, etc. A non-fiction work can either be short which is a part of larger publications such as books or journals (e.g. Evolution by Jerks, The Piracy Paradox); or long which is a book by itself (e.g. Between Silk and Cyanide, Rich Dad, Poor Dad).

Research works such as thesis and dissertations (e.g. Applied Stochastic Eigen-Analysis, The Concept of Potentiality).

Scholarly works such as articles published in journals, conference proceedings and other scholarly publications (e.g. Size and Scaling in Human Evolution, The Paradox of Genius).

Books and other written works that are published in eBook form and other electronic or digital format (e.g. Leadership IQ, Optical Networking eBook).

Other written works using ancient writings and inscriptions (e.g. Berlin Papyrus, Book of the Dead).

Editions of any existing written work whether in print, audio or digital versions (e.g. Ender's Game, The Ruby Way eBook edition, Pride and Prejudice).

Use the book edition type for these.

Literary series should not be typed as written work, but the books that are part of a series should be.

For instance, the Twilight series is not a written work but the books included in this series, such as Twilight and Eclipse, are to be typed as written work.

Use the adaptation and opera types for operas (e.g. La Traviata, Alice in Wonderland).

Use the adaptation and videogame types for video game adaptations (e.g. War of the Worlds, The Golden Compass).
