An organism classification is a set of living things, (e.g., plants, animals, microorganisms), that has a classification rank, (e.g., Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species, Subspecies).
A complete list of possible classifications can be found in the Organism Classification Rank type.
For example, for Labrador Retriever, the classification would break down as follows:
Classification level | Name |
---|---|
Domain | Eukarya |
Kingdom | Animalia |
Phylum | Chordata |
Class | Mammalia |
Order | Carnivora |
Family | Canidae |
Genus | Canis |
Species | Canis lupus |
Subspecies | Canis lupus familiaris |
Breed | Labrador Retriever |
Each of these classifications, from the highest classification (Domain) down to the lowest classification (Subspecies / Breed / Hybrid / etc), are all organism classifications.
In plants, sub groups below species are referred to as different varieties (e.g. Kokoro), subvarieties, cultivars (e.g. Pyramidata), forms, and subforms while in single-celled organisms, they are referred to as strains. All of these can be considered organism classifications. (See discussion here.)
Within the animal kingdom, subspecies may be termed races or breeds. For example, all domesticated dogs are grouped in the same species, ''Canis lupus'', though we all know there is a huge diversity of breeds (like the Labrador Retriever).
Hybrid, the offspring resulting from cross-breeding of different plants or animals e.g. Coydog, are also organism classifications. (See discussion here.)
Use the organism type for an individual organism, such as household pets, animal performers, racehorses, even named plants.
