Introduction What is a song - freebase-schema/freebase GitHub Wiki
Think about your favorite song for a moment. What is it?
What genre is it: rock, hiphop, jazz? Something else?
Just think of one song that you really enjoy listening to again and again.
Now while thinking about that song, try to define what exactly a song is...
What is a song? Is it a recording? Is a set of lyrics? Is it sheet music? Is it a certain melody that we can sing along to?
What can be a song? Is Beethoven’s 5th a song? What about “Mary Had A Little Lamb”?
If you think about the word “song” from a few angles, you’ll realize pretty quickly that it could be defined in a number of ways.
On Freebase, we are more exact. We don’t use the word “song”. Instead, we break a musical piece up into its various parts.
If you haven’t thought about music in such a way before, it might sound confusing to think of breaking up a musical composition (a “song”) into parts, but you’ll get the hang of it quickly.
In this lab, we’ll look at musical compositions in a way that helps us understand Freebase a little more deeply. Not just the song itself, but even the people involved and more.
We’ll also listen to some good music along the way! ♫
