Types in the Awards Domain, a Brief Overview

More information about these types can be found on the individual type pages.

  • Award : this is the general award, e.g. Pulitzer Prize, rather than a category such as Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.

  • Award category : this represents any award or prize; it should only be used with specific awards, such as the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, and not for general awards such as Pulitzer Prize.

  • Award Presenting Organization : any group that presents one or more awards.

  • Award Winner : a person or organization that has won an award or prize.

  • Award-Winning Work : a work (of any kind) that has won an award or prize.

  • Award Nominee : a person or organization that has been nominated for an award or prize; this techincally should include winners as well.

  • Award-Nominated Work : a work (of any kind) that has been nominated for an award or prize.

  • Award Honor, Award Nomination, and Award Long List: these are compound value types that connect the winners or nominees to their awards and works.

Entering award information

There are several ways to go about entering award information: from the topic page for a specific award, from the page of a person or organization that won an award, or from a work or product that won an award.

Entering data from the topic page of an award category

Note that not all awards have nominees, so this property may be left blank. For awards that do have nominees, note that the winners should usually also be entered as nominees. (Doing this consistently will enable applications to calculate, say, the actors with the most nominations but no wins, etc.)

To add a winner or nominee, click on the “winners” or “nominees” property. This will bring up four fields:

  • Year: depending on the award, this is either the year the award was presented, or the year of eligibility. Use whichever convention is used by the award itself.

  • Award Winner: this is a person (or people) or organization (or organizations). See below for help entering muliple recipients.

  • Honored For: this is the “work” the winner(s) are being honored for, usually something concrete like a book or performance in a film. Because the work will be a Freebase topic, honors that are essentially descriptions should go in the “notes/description” field.

  • Notes/Description: this field can be used for any data that doesn’t fit in the other fields, but its primary uses are to enter descriptive award honor information (e.g., the description “for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect” should go in this field for Albert Einstein’s Nobel Prize in Physics), or to capture notes such as “posthumous” or “declined."

Multiple Winners or Nominees

If there is a tie, e.g., if two different people are given the same award in the same year for different works, these should be entered as two different entries under the “winners” property. If, however, two or more people share an award (e.g., three people who co-wrote a song), these people should all be entered in the "winners" property of the same Award Honor.

Doing this will ensure that award counts will be accurate. E.g., if three people share an Academy Award for Special Effects, entering all three as part of the same award honor ensures that only one instance of the award is created. Entering them separately would result in that movie having three awards for special effects, which would throw off anyone who was trying to compare the numbers of awards won by films.

Note that the same steps can be used in the less common case where one person recieves an award or nomination for multiple works.

Entering award data from the topic page of a person or organization

To be able to enter the award data for a person or organization, they will need either the “award winner” or “award nominee” type added to their topic page; the property “awards won” or “award nominations” will be added to the page. To add an award, follow the steps under “entering data from the topic page of an award,” above. Note that the field “award winner” or “award nominee” may appear. Unless they are sharing the award with someone else, this field should be left blank; the person whose page you are editing is added automatically to the award or nomination.

Entering award data from the topic page of a work

To be able to enter the award data for a person's work, such as a book or film, it will need either the “award-winning work” or “award-nominated work” type added to its topic page; the property “awards won” or “award nominations” will be added to the page. To add an award, follow the steps under “entering data from the topic page of an award,” above.
