SWR and Power Meter Calibration

Your Wolf is equipped with an integrated SWR and Power Meter.

Before you go on air with your Wolf it is very important to calibrate its SWR Meter so that it can properly protect itself from high SWR operation and precisely set the internal tuner.

In this page we will see how to perform SWR and Power Meter calibration both at the same time.

Reference equipment

To calibrate your Wolf's SWR and Power meter we will obviously need a trusted SWR/Power meter for both HF and VHF bands to serve as a reference.

Wolf SWR/Power meter calibration

The SWR/Power Meter of the Wolf can be adjusted per band in the Menu\Calibration\RX menu (check here if you can't find the Calibration menu):

Here are the available bands:

  • LHF: 160m / 80m,
  • MHF: 40m / 30m / 20m / 17m,
  • HHF: 15m / 12m / 10m,
  • 6M: 6m,
  • 2M: 2m.

For each band:

  • use SWR FWD RATE to calibrate the Power meter,
  • and SWR BWD RATE to calibrate the SWR meter.

You will have to calibrate the SWR/Power meter for all the bands that you are using.

Calibration procedure

To calibrate the SWR/Power meter of each band we will:

  1. Connect the output of the Wolf to the TX input of the reference SWR meter,
  2. Connect the antenna to the ANT output of the reference SWR meter,
  3. Find a frequency where your antenna as a SWR value around 1.5 (set the Wolf power to 10% to search for that frequency without damaging the PA),
  4. Set the Wolf power to 100%,
  5. Set the Wolf mode to NFM,
  6. Press the PTT button,
  7. Adjust the SWR FWD RATE (for Power) and SWR BWD RATE (for SWR) values so that the Power and SWR values displayed on the Wolf match the ones from the reference SWR meter.
