Power Calibration

The Wolf 100W version (RU4PN RF board) uses Mitsubishi RD100HHF1 (100W HF) and Mitsubishi RA80H1415M1 (60W VHF/UHF) for PA.

To get the most power out of the PA without over-driving it, we need to find the sweet spot for the PA input signal amplitude.

Reference equipment

To adjust the Wolf's PA input signal we will need a Power meter for both HF and VHF bands. This will help us monitoring the PA output Power while adjusting the input signal to find the sweet spot.

Wolf Power calibration

The Wolf allows us to adjust the PA input signal per band in the Menu\Calibration\TX menu (check here if you can't find the Calibration menu):

You will have to calibrate the PA input signal amplitude for all the bands that you are using.

Calibration procedure

To calibrate the PA input signal amplitude of each band, we will:

  1. Connect the output of the Wolf to the TX input of the reference Power meter,
  2. Connect a dummy load to the ANT output of the reference Power meter,
  3. Set a frequency in the middle of the desired band
  4. Set the mode to NFM
  5. Set the Wolf power to 100%
  6. Press and hold the PTT button
  7. Adjust the RF Gain by increasing it until the point where the output power on the Power Meter doesn't increase any more
  8. If needed, decrease the RF Gain again to the point where the output power starts decreasing again
