ME: Browser Gripes - fordsfords/fordsfords.github.io GitHub Wiki

A couple years ago, I switched from Chrome to FireFox. There were several things about Chrome I hated and I finally switched.

I've more recently switched back to Chrome. For different reasons.

Problem is, I can't remember what all those reasons are! So I'm tying to re-create them here.

Chrome Gripes

  • When entering text in a text box that already has a lot of text in it (such that the text box needs a scroll bar), if you put the cursor somewhere and hit "enter", it is very common for Chrome to scroll the page to position the cursor to the top of the text box. DON'T DO THAT! Leave the page at its current scroll point. It's very disconcerting. When does this happen? When editing a wiki page, for example. (I edit wiki pages often enough that this might have been the straw that broke the camel's back.) This problem still exists as of 21-Jan-2021.

  • Searching on the web page: Chrome sucks at remembering what I last searched for. I can't figure out why it comes up with what it does.

Firefox Gripes

I found that Firefox's memory footprint slowly grows over time WHILE MY LAPTOP IS ASLEEP!!! I woke it up and my system was out of memory. Now I'm sure it is partly because of some horrible web page that has horrible dynamic content that wants to run constantly. But it's Firefox's fault that let it grow without bound.
