The IOGEAR GWU637 is a WIFI-to-Ethernet adapter. It is for computers that have no WIFI adapter but do have an Ethernet adapter. See https://www.iogear.com/support/dm/manual/GWU637 for manual (download archive).

It needs power from a USB-compatible source (if plug into computer, it only uses it for power).

I was able to use my Windows laptop and *not* disable WIFI. But I *did* have to set the Ethernet interface to a static IP address (since it wasn't on a network to begin with and therefore didn't have a DHCP address).

I COULD NOT USE CHROME TO SET IT UP!!! When I would try to "apply" the SSID, it said it got an invalid response. I tried many times the same result. Finally, I switched to FireFox and it worked fine. (Note: my memory isn't go good. It might have been the exact opposite. At any rate, one of the two didn't work and the other did.)
