Dog care checklist - fordsfords/fordsfords.github.io GitHub Wiki
We boarded Borris over night at a friend's house. I forgot a few things, but of course, everything was fine.
This is a checklist for next time.
Bring:
- Dog bed
- Travel bag
- Waste bags
- Food, bowl, & 1/3 cup measure
- Large toy
- Dog towel if rain possible
Provide:
- Water dish
Instructions:
- Treats are great. A small treat is just as good as a big one, so make them SMALL! I break his kibble in half. Give one at a time. Always make him sit before you give him one.
- Walk every 4-ish hours during the day. Usually poops twice (but can be 1 or 3).
- Carry a few kibble in a baggie during walks. Make sure he associates the baggie with the kibble.
- The main purpose is to get his attention so that he pays attention to you. Always command him to "sit" before you give.
- He usually ignores other dogs, which is a good thing. But sometimes he is too interested. Call his name, get out a kibble, and tell him to "sit" before you give it.
- He doesn't like rain, but can deal with it.
- Carry a few kibble in a baggie during walks. Make sure he associates the baggie with the kibble.
- First walk about 8am-ish, last walk about 9pm-ish.
- Feed AM/PM, 1/3 cup (level) each.
- He might want to sleep in your bed, or maybe not. If he gets on but you don't want, just get a kibble, tell him to "go on" and point at his bed. Tell him to sit (on his bed) before giving the kibble.
- Don't leave him alone with your food in his reach. It is instinct for dogs to take your food if you walk away.
- Dogs don't understand "no" very well. For example, if he barks, telling him "no" won't help. Instead, get out a kibble and tell him "come". Point at a nearby spot as where he should go to. Tell him "sit". Give the kibble. He stopped barking, didn't he? :-)
- Remember: telling a dog to DO something always works better than telling him NOT to do something.
