Installing FFR (macOS) - flashflashrevolution/rCubed GitHub Wiki

(Draft in progress! TODO: Add more pictures)

To run FFR on macOS, Wine needs to be installed. It is software that could run Windows programs on non-Windows operating systems. It currently supports macOS Mountain Lion 10.8 to Catalina 10.15.

  1. Go to https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/macosx/download.html and click on the option that says 'Installer for "Wine Stable"'. A file should be downloaded onto your computer.

  2. Double-click on the downloaded file and the macOS installer program should open. Follow the instructions shown. (I don't know what password to enter to start the installation!) (Apple cannot check the installer for malicious software!)

  3. It doesn't matter whether you choose to install the package for all users or for your current user. Either choice is fine.

  4. When the installation is done, you should see an entry that says "Wine Stable" in your Launchpad.

  5. Click on the entry, and a new Terminal window should open. Close the Terminal window.

  6. Go to https://www.flashflashrevolution.com and click on the blue 'Download FFR' button, or go to https://www.flashflashrevolution.com/download.

  7. Select an engine build you would like to use and click on its 'Download' button. A zip file should be downloaded onto your computer. (Note for macOS Catalina users)

  8. Go to the directory containing the downloaded zip file. Extract the zip.

  9. Move into the extracted folder and double-click on the FFR executable.

  10. Have fun!

Note for macOS Catalina users:

Only the 64-bit engine could be run with Wine. For all other supported macOS versions, both the 32-bit and 64-bit engines could be run.

Frequently asked questions

I don't know what password to enter to start the installation!

If you see a window like the one above prompting you to enter administrator credentials to proceed with the installation, and you don't know what the credentials are, you might try doing one of the following instead (which most likely still involves entering administrator credentials):

  1. Use or buy other software similar to Wine (e.g. Qemu, CrossOver). This is the most recommended method.
  2. Run FFR through a Windows 7/8/8.1/10 virtual machine. This would most likely degrade gameplay performance severely.
  3. Manage to get browser Flash working to run FFR online. This isn't recommended as Flash makes your browser more vulnerable, and the web versions might be taken offline one day since they aren't supported anymore.
  4. Use Adobe Flash Player to load and play the web version of FFR. This also isn't recommended for basically the same reasons for method 3.

Apple cannot check the Wine installer for malicious software!

If you see a window like the one above, you need to make a security exception for it to make it run:

  1. At the top left of your screen, click on the Apple logo to bring up the system menu, then click on 'System Preferences...'.

  2. The System Preferences window should pop up. Click on 'Security & Privacy'.

  3. In the Security & Privacy window, go to the 'General' tab, then click on 'Open Anyway'.

  4. A window might pop up asking you to enter administrator credentials. Enter them. (I don't know what password to enter!)

  5. You might see a warning prompt asking you whether you're sure you want to open the program. Click on 'Open'.

  6. The installer should now be running.
